A study has suggested that the construction of a new fixed link spanning Denmark’s Kattegat Strait would be viable. The cost of the project would as much as US$17.1 billion however.

The proposals call for a bridge from Jutland to the island of Samsø, with another bridge then connecting Samsø to Zealand. The bridges would carry both a highway and rail lines, connecting on Samsø Island. The proposals will include the construction of new rail links and a new highway on Jutland, with new rail and highway connections also to Kalundborg in Zealand.

Some state funding from the Danish Government would be required, however the study suggests that this would considerably less than originally envisaged when the project was first proposed. One of the proposed financing methods would be to use revenue being generated by the Great Belt Bridge to help pay for the new Kattegatt link. The new route would be tolled as with the road link connecting Denmark with Sweden.
