The Czech Republic is planning a major programme of transport investment. In all the Transport Ministry envisages work on 172 projects over the next three years. A budget of €9.43 billion has been set for the works.

Meanwhile, a project worth €35.4 million has been awarded to the Swedish contractor Skanska by the Road and Motorway Directorate. The work is for a 3km bypass around the city of Karvina, which lies close to the Polish border.

Included in the project will be the construction of a bridge, as well as an underpass and noise barriers. The project is scheduled for completion in June 2023.

Karvina lies in the centre of the Czech Republic's coal producing region in Silesia. Heavily industrialised, Karvina's roads carry a high percentage of heavy truck traffic and building the bypass will reduce the number of vehicles having to enter the city. Karvina lies close to Ostrava in the Czech Republic as well as Katowice across the border in Poland, two cities that have traditionally been home to some of Europe's biggest producing underground coal mines.
