Costa Rica’s road development plans

A series of loans is helping pay for the 11 major road and bridge projects currently underway in Costa Rica. In all the projects involve US$1.13 billion of financing. One of the biggest projects is the $495 million upgrade work being carried out for Ruta 32, between Rio Fri and Limon. Other major projects include the $200 million upgrade for the La Angostura to Limonal route, the $163 million improvement to the Circunvalacion Norte, $66 million for a new flyover in Cartago and $25 million for the Sixaola bi

  • Major plan for Bolivian highway expansion underway

    Bolivia has a major programme of highway expansion and improvements underway at present in a plan designed to improve the country’s transport links. The programme includes 16 double-lane highways being built, costing some US$1.85 billion in all. The work is being managed by the state-run road administration company ABC. The roads will improve connections to La Paz, Oruro, Santa Cruz and Cochabamba. The road between La Paz and Oruro is 80% finished. The other projects will be finished between 2015 and 2018.

  • Chile announces road projects, including for the Autopista del Sol

    The Chilean government has announced around 800 road projects for 2016, mostly linked to road concessions, costing about US$1.44 billion. Schemes include those on the Autopista del Sol motorway, such as a third lane between Santiago and Talagante, an alternative access to Penaflor, improvements to the Talagante link and a control centre.     Costa Rica’s Ministry of Public Works and Transports (MOPT) is planning 110 road improvement projects, with a total cost of US$144 million. Construction will start on the first 14 of these in July 2019, with the work being carried out by the contractor MECO. Funding for the work is being provided by the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) in the shape of a loan. The tender processes for a further 10 projects are commencing, with tenders for an additional 18 projects due to commence in July 2019.
