Colombia’s key tunnel – completion date set?

Colombia has set a new date for the completion of the La Linea tunnel project of May 2020. The project has been subject to a series of delays due to issues such as insufficient financing, unexpected geological problems and even the wrong type of insurance cover. Colombia has set a new date for the completion of the La Linea tunnel project of May 2020. The project has been subject to a series of delays due to issues such as insufficient financing, unexpected geological problems and even the wrong type of insurance cover.

The completion date for the main tunnel stretch has been moved back several times, but it is hoped that it will finally be completed on the date, which was announced by Colombia’s president, Ivan Duque.

The completion of the entire project, which includes 25 tunnels in all as well as a stretch of dual carriageway from Cajamarca to Calarca, will be achieved in December 2020 according to Duque.

Additional funding worth US$217.65 million has now been secured to complete the project. Opening the link is expected to boost transport safety and capacity, increasing levels trade and tourism in the area.
