China investing in Bangladesh infrastructure

The governments of Bangladesh and China have been discussing the possibiilty of investments in infrastructure. China will invest some US$50 billion in helping Bangladesh develop its infrastructure network. Transport will be a key priority. Key projects will include an elevated expressway and a four lane highway, as well as a new rail link and the Karnafuli River Tunnel.

    Plans are in hand for a major upgrade to a key route in Bangladesh. The US$1.52 billion project will see the 190km Elenga-Hatikumrul-Rangpur route being widened to four lanes, with two lanes in either direction. The route includes a crossing over the Brahmaputra River. Some of the funding will be provided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), close to Elenga.
