China Harbor Engineering picks up Brunei’s Muara Besar project

Brunei has awarded Chinese infrastructure construction company China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC) the US$204 million Pulau Muara Besar Bridge, Road and Utilities project through an open tender. Brunei has awarded Chinese infrastructure construction company China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC) the US$204 million Pulau Muara Besar Bridge, Road and Utilities project through an open tender.

CHEC reportedly signed the deal with the Brunei Economic Development Board on May 6, according to Chinese media.

Pulau Muara Besar is a 955ha island in Brunei Bay, immediately across from Brunei’s largest port town, Muara, on the mainland. The island is undergoing major infrastructure development including construction of a deep water container terminal, export processing zone, manufacturing hub with all supporting commercial facilities and services, and a bridge linking the island to Muara town.

The board said the project, to be completed in 2018, should attract greater foreign direct investment in petrochemical and associated downstream oil and gas sectors.

CHEC will construct a main road almost 3km long on Pulau Muara Besar (Bear Island) and a 2.7km bridge to Muara.

Also included in the deal is development of treated and untreated water supplies, telecommunication lines and power lines. CHEC specialises in building roads, bridges, railways, airports, marine engineering, dredging and reclamation.
