Boppard-based 172 Bomag is boosting its production line in China for the second time. At the same time as the expansion of the plant, a newly built training centre has also been opened, with both moves intended to allow the firm continued growth in the region.

Since 2002, BOMAG has been represented in China by its own subsidiary and factory and in 2006 this became a 100% BOMAG subsidiary. By this time, however, the factory in Fengxian, near Shanghai, which opened in 2002, had already become too small, so BOMAG began building a new facility not far from the old site. By 2007, a new plant was constructed at a new site in Fengxian. However, this plant's capacity was soon to run out due to the increasing turnover in China and the Asian region and, in 2011, the company therefore began extending production once again. The existing plant was extended and a new training centre was added at the same time. Both were officially opened on schedule at the end of February 2012. In 2010, BOMAG took over BOMA, its year-long dealer in China, which means that it now has its own sales network on the Chinese market, as well as a large-scale production facility and a training centre.

Far too often, managers will view training as a luxury and not as a competitive and strategic necessity. Lazy team leaders regularly argue that it is a waste of time and money training their people, not least because these same trainees might subsequently leave the organisation. Courses are seen as an interruption, and a good way to delay things. There is always something much more pressing and important on the to-do list and staff can end up feeling forced into the training department. But these are weak a
