The IRF Global Regional Caribbean event was a major success

The 12th IRF Global Caribbean Regional Congress has been held in collaboration with the Department of Transportation and Public Works of Puerto Rico (DTOP). It concluded with great success, bringing together key stakeholders, experts, and industry leaders from 26 countries across the Caribbean region and beyond.

Over the course of four days, attendees participated in a series of insightful sessions, workshops, and discussions, exploring innovative solutions and best practices for addressing key challenges in Caribbean transportation infrastructure. Prominent speakers from prestigious institutions, including the Department of Transportation and Public Works of Puerto Rico (DTOP), US Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, National Transportation Safety Board, UNITAR, universities, and private sector companies, shared their expertise on critical themes such as Road Safety, Climate Resilience, and Road Asset Management—key pillars for a robust Caribbean transportation system.

A central focus of the congress was the growing threat of climate change to the Caribbean's infrastructure. Experts emphasised the urgent need for sustainable solutions to protect regional transportation networks, discussing innovative approaches to developing roads that can withstand extreme weather and adapt to rising sea levels. The Caribbean Development Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank presented effective strategies to enhance climate resilience, bolster regional capacity for emergency response, and support recovery efforts.

As part of the event, IRF Global arranged a technical visit to the Diamond Divergent (DDI) intersection project in Puerto Rico, including a tour of the Traffic Management Center (TMC) operated by PRHTA and Metropistas.

Participants were impressed by the TMC’s advanced capabilities and recognised its potential to transform traffic flow and significantly improve safety in the region.

The International Road Federation (IRF Global) extends sincere thanks to all speakers, participants, and sponsors for their invaluable contributions and support. We look forward to the next opportunity to gather and continue our shared mission of improving road infrastructure across the Caribbean.
