UK firm 7951 Macismo has become a specialist in the field of developing innovative technologies for asphalt products, having developed extensive experience in providing contracting services.

A key focus of the firm has been to produce additives for cold and warm asphalt applications and also to develop a rejuvenator for use in the process of recycling asphalt pavement. Macismo has become a leading supplier of chemicals and additives to the global construction and road surface treatments industries.

A key development has been the additive used in the Colpatch system, used for repairing roads. The Macfix cold asphalt technology has been used successfully by 184 Colas, which has been employing the Macfix additive in the Colpatch product in bags and buckets. Due to the ability for the cold asphalt to remain workable below freezing and stockable for at least two years without any detrimental effect on the permanence of the end product, the Colpatch can be transported, delivered and stored in bulk open loads all around the UK. This has led to road authority maintenance depots being able to receive material at their own depots, removing the need for multiple operating crews to journey to the nearest asphalt plant for product supplies. Colpatch has been awarded the BBA certification for permanent repair status with workability down to -10°C. The success of the Colpatch product has resulted in the initial five year licence being extended to 12 years, and renewal talks underway for a further extension. This Macfix pr
oduct is now widely used in other countries, such as South Africa and Germany.

Following years of research and development Macismo is launching its latest innovative product Rapfix rejuvenator at the PPRS 1st World summit in Paris. The Rapfix is aimed for use in general asphalt production to raise the percentage of RAP in the new mixes, but due to the higher than expected fluxing power it has been found that Rapfix is capable of rejuvenating 100% RAP at ambient temperatures; as discovered by Highland Regional Council.

In addition, the firm has established a strategic joint venture with Industry leaders to innovate and construct a new concept for heating and handling RAP at static asphalt mixing plants, mobile pug mixing plants and eventually in-situ recycling trains. Macismo has expanded its headquarters in Worcester and its experience covers micro-surfacing design and application, surface dressing design and application, cold asphalt technologies, bitumen emulsion design, asphalt properties and performance, and hot and warm asphalt production and application.

*Bitumen from recycled asphalt can be rejuvenated using additives, according to Iterchimica The use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is common in many countries. However, the aged bitumen from RAP has a lower penetration and is more viscous than when first mixed. This reclaimed bitumen is generally balanced by the addition of fresh binder that is softer than those typically used to produce hot mixes. But balancing penetration and softening point or viscosity will not deliver bitumen identical to the orig

ASI Solutions has developed a fast pothole repair technique in the shape of its Rhinopatch process. This comes with a life-time guarantee and is said to offer a fast repair solution when a pothole or other road surface defect fails. The firm says that using this technique means that there is no need for a works team to re-visit a site and further disrupt traffic. The solution is to provide a road repair using replacement material of a superior quality to the existing road surface and to eliminate any joints
