Merlo's e-Worker on duty

After record sales last year, Merlo started 2020 by picking up the SaMoTer Innovation Award in the Telehandler Category for its e-Worker range. The off-road mobile 100% electric elevating work platforms are 785mm-wide machines. They come in a two-wheel drive e-Worker 60 version and a four-wheel drive E-Worker 90. Both can can operate on 40% gradients.

They also use software - developed by the Merlo Group – to monitor batteries and optimise their use. The average consumption of the machine is 6kW/h which allows it a full eight-hour shift of work. This makes it useful for road tunnel construction where space is limited and emissions must be kept to a minimum.

Advances in transmission technology will help to optimise machine performance – writes Mike Woof. As construction machines have become more sophisticated, so have the transmission systems used in items of equipment. Advances in electronics and software in particular have allowed the development of integrated transmissions. These operate more efficiently and help optimise power delivery from an engine, boosting torque response and cutting fuel consumption and emissions at the same time. The smart electronics

Deutz has revealed its first integrated hybrid and electric drive system for mobile plant and machinery. Called E-Deutz, the modular power unit combines a diesel engine, electric motor and battery pack, which forms the basis of a full range of electric drives and hybrid systems as the engine maker moves forward with its electrification strategy. E-Deutz is currently available with a 110kW output, which combines 55kW from a 2.9 litre TCD2.9 stage V-compliant diesel engine with a 55kW electric motor with

Bonfiglioli is developing an array of advanced driveline solutions that will boost working efficiency for an array of off-highway machine types. The firm has developed a hybrid drive for aerial platforms, which allows the units to run in electric only mode for operation in confined spaces in car parks or for tunnel maintenance for example. A full electric drive system for an aerial platform will be offered in early 2019, although Bonfiglioli is not keen to disclose which manufacturer will introduce the unit
