Having recently commissioned a 2924 Sennebogen 640 HD crawler crane, Hans Wolf is using its machine equipped with a dragline bucket for gravel extraction. The machine was supplied from Sennebogen’s plant, also in Straubing, and was purchased following a successful trial at the site.

The Hans Wolf group is based in Straubing and has a network of gravel plants and transport companies in Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate. The firm extracts sand and gravel from a series of sites ranged along the banks of the Danube River. The use of duty cycle crawler cranes with dragline buckets in this application is well proven and the firm was keen to use the same working method for its new gravel site, close to the historic city of Regensburg. While the sieving and sorting plant is still under construction, the new machine is carrying out development work.

Powered by a Cat diesel delivering 186kW, the machine extracts about 1500m³ of gravel/day from a depth of up to 6m. Two 12tonne capacity freefall winches provide an optimal pulling force for the 1.96m³ drag bucket, while the machine is said to offer fast cycle times. The firm extracts about 150m³ from the ground/hour on average.

Stability is said to be good due to the telescoping crawler chassis and the machine features 700mm wide track plates. Its comparatively compact dimensions and its novel ballast mounting system are said to save time transporting the machine between sites. Other benefits include the latest Maxcab cab, effective lighting, a good all-around view and high safety. Machine uptime is maximised due to a SENCON diagnostic and control system.

Meanwhile, another operation in Bavaria is using one of 718 Liebherr’s HS 8300 HD models for sand and gravel extraction. This particular machine is of note as it is the first Liebherr crane on the market to be equipped with the firm’s novel Pactronic hybrid drive.

The HS 8300 HD is said to combine robust design with state-of-the-art-technology, allowing high working efficiency. Further optimising its performance are hydraulic free-fall winches offering about 50tonnes of line pull. The machine is being used by Wanner & Märker for gravel excavation at one of its three quarries, located close to the city of Ingolstadt.
The machine tips the scales at more than 350tonnes and is being used on the site with a 44m long main boom and a dragline bucket made by Rädlinger. The digging depth is approximately 26m, while its unloading height is about 15m.

The highly efficient Pactronic hybrid drive is said to increase output by some 25% and this is the first machine on the construction machinery market equipped with the system. The innovative hybrid drive uses hydraulic technology to store surplus energy, which is subsequently recirculated into the system, increasing material handling capacity while significantly reducing fuel consumption.

The hybrid drive is already a proven technology, however, as it has been used in Liebherr’s mobile harbour cranes since 2010. The system uses a proven hydraulic accumulator and is said to feature low maintenance requirements and high reliability. The reduced energy consumption also lowers emissions.

During its development special attention was paid to an extended service life of the duty cycle crawler crane, which has been built with heavy-duty steel fabrications and with high stress areas featuring additional reinforcement.

As with other Liebherr machines the HS 8300 HD incorporates many components and system solutions developed by the firm. It uses the proven Litronic control system, which is based on CANBUS technology and includes all control and monitoring functions of the machine. RSS
