New machines are now coming to the international market, with Chinese firms producing a particularly strong showing. At the last 2730 BICES exhibition in Chinese capital Beijing, one of the most notable developments was how many of the country’s equipment manufacturers now offer ranges of soil compaction and/or asphalt compaction equipment.

Several of the leading Chinese firms such as 269 LiuGong, 1170 Sany and 1171 Shantui, have broadened their offering to include compaction units, either through in-house development or by acquisition. Meanwhile there is also a competitive market in the country with other smaller manufacturers also now offering compaction equipment.

The Chinese compaction machines tend to follow European design trends in many respects, with curved engine covers at the rear to maximise visibility and vibration damped cabs to improve operator comfort. The quality of the Chinese machines has developed visibly in recent years, with the current generation of equipment revealing modern designs and styling. Some firms have achieved this through partnerships or licensing deals with western manufacturers that have provided access to proven designs. Other Chinese firms have developed their own models using in-house research and development, with some larger manufacturers growing their product lines by the acquisition of smaller companies.

Kotai is one of China’s small-medium sized manufacturers and builds a proven line-up of compaction machines, although the units are sold under the Jotec name for export according to business manager Stone Chan.

The range includes soil compactors, twin drum asphalt compactors and also rubber tyred compactors. Using the 3886 Jotec brand, 3885 Kotai is already exporting machines to various African, Asian, Middle Eastern and Latin American countries and hopes to further expand sales. The model range also continues to expand, with new products offering higher performance than earlier generation units.

From Sany comes the new STR130C asphalt compactor, one of the newest Chinese rollers. This model features a versatile, five step exciter system that is said to be designed for long working life as well as ease of use. The machine is claimed to deliver high compaction surface quality and density, aided by its sophisticated water spray system, which comes with 12 settings. Weighing in at 13.75tonnes, the machine offers a Sany-developed SYMC intelligent control system and a high visibility, noise reduced comfort cab. Sany has also developed its soil compactor range and says that its latest machines offer considerable performance advantages over earlier generation models.
