172 Bomag has carried out a successful series of demonstrations of its new BM500/15 compact milling machines in Berlin. The machine was tested at the Representative Offices of Rheinland-Palatinate to the Federal Government and the 1116 European Union in Berlin and for the first time the planer carried out practical tests in the grounds of the company's Berlin Branch. A total of around 100 guests watched a highly convincing demonstration. After a reception at the Representative Offices of Rheinland-Palatinate delegates saw the machines being run at the company's Berlin Branch.

Nine tests were carried out by the new planer. A defective concrete channel had to be milled on both sides for 500mm in a total of three strips around 40mm deep. The quick-change LA 15 (500mm) milling drum was selected and was able to leave a clean and precise edge and a level surface. The conveyor belt on a compact planer often has to be disconnected for certain work such as to position the rear of the machine close to a wall and the faster this can be achieved, the less downtime for the contractor. The process time including dismounting from the machine, lowering the scraper and setting off again took 2 minutes 30 seconds. Planing a manhole cover is another key task and the machine was able to perform this quickly and efficiently. Changing the drum is also important for versatility and this job took 8 minutes 6 seconds. The disconnected conveyor belt was now reconnected - just as easily and quickly. This ensures that the versatility of this BOMAG planer is fully utilised. This procedure is only carried out on-site if the conveyor belt is easily disconnected and connected, ensuring that hand cutting work in tight spaces is reduced. The sixth task involved the POWER DRUM, a milling drum with 20mm line spacing, to plane out an 80-120mm deep crack in the asphalt and to load the milled material. The next task was to plane a concrete channel, a speciality for the POWER DRUM. With the drum's large line spacing, the individual cutters generate greater cutting power and pulverise the hard concrete. The last two tasks involved examining ease of servicing. Checking the spray bar is said to be particularly easy, just like the other service points. All are easily and quickly accessible on the right side of the machine where everything is in view and nothing gets forgotten.

Special reinforcements can extend the life of an old or new road, and also offer environmental benefits. Patrick Smith reports. Asphalt reinforcement can extend the service life of a resurfaced road by a factor of 3-4, says Huesker, developers of the HaTelit range of asphalt reinforcement. Aimed at preventing the propagation of reflective cracking from an old asphalt layer through a new surface course, Huesker claims the formation of reflective cracking is considerably delayed or even completely prevented u
