Concrete pavers improve major highway upgrade

In Brazil, concrete pavers from 2395 Wirtgen are being used to improve sections of the BR-101 highway as well as to construct concrete safety barriers. The use of these machines is of note as it is the first time concrete paving has been used on a federal road in Brazil. The 1st Army Engineering Division of the Brazilian Army is carrying out three of the eight North Eastern sections, as the construction work had to be speeded up project because the road is deemed crucial to the country's economy. Two Wirtgen SP850 pavers are working on the US$850 million upgrade to the 400km long North Eastern stretch of the BR-101 highway, where traffic loads are particularly heavy. This section of the highway links five major ports, while it is also a main route for the transport of sugar cane, a major industry in the area. To maximise productivity for the pavers, concrete is being as close to the working area as possible and transported using a fleet of mixer trucks. The sometimes tricky weather conditions in the North East of Brazil mean that a curing compound has to be applied to the concrete immediately after the texture has been produced and a Wirtgen TCM950 texture curing machine is also being used on the project. Meanwhile to maximise safety on the highway, barriers are being installed using a number of the smaller Wirtgen SP250 slipformers. The Brazilian Army bought the concrete paving equipment from Wirtgen and its construction crews had to undergo additional training so as to use the machines effectively. So far around 50% of the upgrade to the Northern stretch of the BR-101 highway, which runs through the states of Rio Grande Norte, Paraíba and Pernambuco, has been completed. A further 350km of the Southern section of the highway is being upgraded as the road was originally built 30 years ago and it is no longer able to cope with the traffic volumes of up to 15,000 vehicles/day.

A specially adapted Wirtgen SP25i concrete slipformer has been used on the M6 motorway near Cannock in the UK. The machine worked together with a Wirtgen ISF25i (independent side feeder) in order to pave a concrete slab under difficult conditions. With an overall length of 373km, the M6 is the longest and one of the most heavily congested motorways in the UK. The M6 connects the M1 motorway near Rugby with Carlisle near the Scottish border. But due to the steadily growing volume of traffic, the Highways

Tough competition is being seen in the specialised market for concrete slipforming machines, with new partnerships and new technology coming to market - Mike Woof writes GOMACO is boosting the versatility of its Commander slipformer further with the development of the new Three-Track Commander IIIx variant. This has been configured to cope with much tighter radii than previous versions of the Commander III, allowing it to slipform a radius of just 610mm. This suits the machine to applications such as sli

The latest technology continues to improve the quality of concrete paving while contractors are also benefiting from more adaptable equipment - Mike Woof reports For many concrete paving applications, versatility is required rather than a high production rate. Leading paver manufacturers such as GOMACO, Power Curbers, Terex and Wirtgen all offer high mobility machines that can be adjusted to cope with an array of tasks. For a contractor, the advantage of these smaller pavers is that they can be configured q

Major innovations in concrete paving systems will offer customers improved surface finishes - Mike Woof writes US manufacturers continue to dominate the concrete paving sector, with German firm Wirtgen being the only exception. A number of Chinese manufacturers have attempted to enter the concrete paving market with compact machines but have so far had little success in tempting customers away from proven brands. The expertise in for the niche segment of concrete paving remains the preserve of a handful
