Sri Lanka's roads revamp

Sri Lanka's war ravaged roads will begin to benefit from a massive improvement programme shortly, following the cessation of hostilities. Some US$3 billion is being spent in the north and east of the country according to the Highways Ministry.

Sri Lanka's war ravaged roads will begin to benefit from a massive improvement programme shortly, following the cessation of hostilities. Some US$3 billion is being spent in the north and east of the country according to the Highways Ministry. The project involves developing small roads, by-roads and main roads in major towns including Killinochchi, Kalmunai, Ampara, Trincomalee, Mannar, Vavuniya and Jaffna. Upgrading of the A-9 road linking capital Colombo with Jaffna is also now due to start.

  • Lithuania loan; funding found for road reconstruction

    Plans to upgrade the Vilnius to Utena highway in Lithuania will now go ahead following the securing of a loan to help pay for the project. The €40 million loan is being sourced from the European Investment Bank (EIB). The loan will be for a period for 12 years, with guarantees being provided by the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI).     The authorities in Uzbekistan are planning for a series of major road projects in a bid to boost the country’s transport connections and freight handling capabilities. A total of 2,306km of roads will be either built or upgraded in the country by 2015. Priority projects include building 1,008km of roads in the Beyneu-Andijan area, as well as rebuilding a 100km stretch of the Tashkent-Osh road.
