Milling work was carried out to remove the worn wearing course
UK Contractor Elm Surfacing recently carried out a milling and repaving job in Brixton in London. The job was carried out on Brixton Water Lane, with the firm using 2395 Wirtgen milling machines to remove the top layers of asphalt from the road surface. Repaving was then carried out using a 1194 Vögele asphalt paver, with a large twin drum roller then being used to compact the surface. Asphalt paving was carried out in two layers, replacing the binder course and wearing course, although the original base course was left untouched.

The work was carried out overnight over a weekend in February 2018. With the road being closed temporarily for the work to continues. A steady flow of trucks was used to remove the milled asphalt from the site, as well as to bring fresh asphalt for use in the resurfacing work.

Of note was the fact that the milling and repaving job was carried out in cold temperatures, with the compaction work having to be carried out very quickly to ensure the surface could meet the required specification.

An airport in Germany has seen the use of very innovative asphalt paving techniques, with the use of dual-layer, hot-to-hot working. The method was used to meet a very tight schedule for the runway rebuilding work, while also delivering the high quality required. Two InLine Pave trains from Vögele were used at Rostock-Laage Airport to lay a new surface and binder course. The operation was innovative as the process used both hot-to-hot, echelon paving as well as dual layer, hot-on-hot working. Using this

In California, in-situ cold recycling with a Wirtgen 3800 CR recycler has proved to be the most economical solution. In the US’s Golden State – California – Wirtgen’s 708kW powerhouse the 3800 CR recycler resurfaced 160km of San José’s main traffic arteries in situ, on-the-spot. The 3800 CR worked with a Vögele VISION 5200-2i tracked paver in a rear-load process. With this method, the 3800 CR travels in reverse, removing the damaged asphalt layers in a down-cut process and transferring the recycled material

Increasing traffic volumes and the loads imposed by heavy-vehicle traffic were said by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to have left the pavement surface covered with alligator cracks, wheel ruts and patches where minor re
