Urban paving in cold weather

UK Contractor Elm Surfacing recently carried out a milling and repaving job in Brixton in London. The job was carried out on Brixton Water Lane, with the firm using Wirtgen milling machines to remove the top layers of asphalt from the road surface. Milling work was carried out to remove the worn wearing course
UK Contractor Elm Surfacing recently carried out a milling and repaving job in Brixton in London. The job was carried out on Brixton Water Lane, with the firm using 2395 Wirtgen milling machines to remove the top layers of asphalt from the road surface. Repaving was then carried out using a 1194 Vögele asphalt paver, with a large twin drum roller then being used to compact the surface. Asphalt paving was carried out in two layers, replacing the binder course and wearing course, although the original base course was left untouched.


The work was carried out overnight over a weekend in February 2018. With the road being closed temporarily for the work to continues. A steady flow of trucks was used to remove the milled asphalt from the site, as well as to bring fresh asphalt for use in the resurfacing work.

Of note was the fact that the milling and repaving job was carried out in cold temperatures, with the compaction work having to be carried out very quickly to ensure the surface could meet the required specification.
