Following a programme of road surface retexturing at five sites to improve skidresistance, 3201 Aberdeenshire Council in Scotland has seen a 100% reduction in crashes and loss of control incidents since the treatment.

Retexturing specialist 2311 Klaruw carried out the work, totalling around 18,000m², using its KlaruwTex190 (K190) all-weather, controlled bush hammering machine. According to Klaruw, by eliminating crash incidents and their ensuing costs, the treatment has also yielded a 2,500% economic rate of return (ERR). Prior to treatment, 34 accidents had been recorded across the five sites in 2009. The K190 process creates small cuts in exposed, polished aggregate using 336 independent computer-controlled treatment tips, regenerating surface texture.

Timely maintenance using proven cost-effective methods can extend the life of a highway by many years as Patrick smith reports Highways are expensive assets to construct, and the wear and tear of modern traffic means that regular maintenance will delay costly repairs or in extreme cases reconstruction. There are a number of methods of carrying out such maintenance, and these include the use of slurry seals and micro-surfacing, which are cold mixed asphalt which is a mixture of graded aggregate, asphalt emul

High speed, high quality concrete paving can be achieved in the demanding airport environment using the latest equipment. Minnich Manufacturing has developed a novel dowel pin drilling machine and has successfully tested this equipment at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida. The A-5SCW is a self-propelled, cantilevered machine that features a wireless remote control and is designed to install five dowel pins simultaneously. The control system has been developed by Wisconsin Kar-Tech and uses prov

In Germany alone, a network of asphalt roads extending more than 600,000km will have to be maintained or repaired. Highway maintenance techniques do vary between European countries but some commonalities exist. There are techniques that have been sidelined in the last few years but which now
