Salzburg Airport in Austria is now benefiting from a 2.75km runway, following major redevelopment work at the facility

The new 2.75km runway was rebuilt following a total shutdown of flights at the airport for five weeks. The rebuilding work was assisted by the use of a compact crusher supplied by Linz-based 747 Rubble Master. This unit was used to crush 8,500tonnes of material on-site at Salzburg Airport, with the material being immediately reused.

"This job was a challenge due to its tight time schedule," said Klaus Weickl, managing director of Weickl Erdbau. "We only had four weeks to complete all the work."

The rented, compact RM 100GO! crusher was able to work directly on-site at Salzburg Airport and in just under a week was able to crush all the material from the 2.75km-long runway into a recyclable final aggregate. This value aggregate was used for the substructure of the new runway. Weickl said that the sustainable use of resources made the project more effective and efficient, reducing transport needs, materials costs and lowering the overall environmental impact of a project. The firm has used crushing equipment from Rubble Master for on-site crushing on previous contracts, such as a section of the A99 Autobahn in Munich where it used an RM 120GO! model.

That was exactly the case for a rehabilitation project on the A2 motorway in Austria between Vienna and Graz near Schäffern. However, the job was further complicated by another factor: all access roads to the job site were roughly 1km apart. Ensuring an uninterrupted supply of mix to the paver under these

Finland’s main international airport, serving the capital Helsinki, is now benefiting from a runway resurfacing project. The rehabilitation work has been needed for one of the airport’s three runways due to a number of age-related defects. Helsinki Airport processes some 17 million passengers/year and due to a combination of the often severe winter weather and the heavy aircraft traffic, the runway condition was not of the standard required. Resurfacing work was scheduled by FINAVIA, with a budget of some

Recycling waste gully materials can save costs and also meet tough European sustainability requirements, with one firm offering a novel solution The effects of the Landfill Directive together with the annual increase in Landfill Tax have significantly increased the cost of disposal of gully waste. This is currently around £50/tonne but is expected to rise to £80/tonne in 2014 in the UK, although other parts of Europe may differ. As a consequence, this has increased the operating costs for companies pro
