MOBA’s new tool helps optimise compaction processes
1228 MOBA is introducing a sophisticated compaction control package. The innovative MCA-500 machine control system is designed for use with compactors and can be used in both earthmoving and road construction applications.

The system allows the compactor operator to monitor progress in real-time on the display. The driver can see key information during the compaction process, such as the intelligent compaction value (ICV), vibration frequency and amplitude. This ensures that over- and under-compaction can be avoided.

Achieving precise compaction is crucial to delivering a high-quality, long-lasting road. Under-compaction will cause early failure while over-compaction will damage the aggregates and result in key specifications not being achieved. To get the best results from the compaction process, monitoring and control of the number of passes and the asphalt temperature is required. The package includes an infrared sensor that is able to monitor heat, ensuring that compaction is carried out while the mat is in its optimum temperature range.

According to MOBA its MCA-500 system offers a comparatively low-cost solution to intelligent compaction. Ian Lewis, MOBA UK’s managing director, said, “Our customers are always asking us how we can help them improve the productivity of their rollers as well as the quality of the finished surface. Because the MCA-500 can be installed on any roller, customers can easily and economically upgrade their existing fleet.”

The launch of this system comes shortly after the introduction of smart compaction tools from 161 Atlas Copco Dynapac and 359 Volvo CE. Atlas Copco’s package is its fourth-generation system while the intelligent compaction offering from 359 Volvo CE is all-new. Rivals 178 Caterpillar, 228 Hamm and 2624 Sakai also have intelligent compaction packages available.
