Measuring paving thickness with MOBA’s technology

A new system from MOBA Mobile Automation allows for accurate measurements to be made of pavement thickness. The new MOBA system can make accurate measurements of pavement layer thickness

A new system from 1228 MOBA Mobile Automation allows for accurate measurements to be made of pavement thickness. Called PAVE-TM, the system can capture the installation thickness of any road layer during asphalt paving and uses contact-free measurement technology.

Layer thickness is a key quality feature in asphalt paving and the PAVE-TM system can help improve process reliability by eliminating errors that occur with manual measurements and also allow savings on materials costs.

The package uses four accurate Sonic-Ski PLUS ultrasonic sensors and an MPC-120 controller to determine the thickness of the layer in real time. After a single adjustment, the system can continuously display the thickness of the layer, whether it is the surface, binder or asphalt base. The GDC-320 displays then show the current thickness values for the paving crew.

Close cooperation with Dynapac means that the firm’s SD pavers can now display current layer thickness directly on their own external control stations. So a user of the SD machines does not need to use the optional GDC-320 display and can rely on the external control stations fitted as standard to the pavers instead. This means that the SD series pavers are PAVE-TM ready when leaving the factory, while the package is available as an add-on system and can be fitted to pavers of all ages and types according to MOBA.
