Electric innovation

An innovative electric paver developed by Volvo CE is now being taken over by Ammann

Volvo CE developed a novel electric paver that has now become part of the Ammann stable

A highly innovative asphalt paver prototype has been developed by Volvo CE, featuring electric power. The machine is based on the conventional P4820 and offers the same tamper bar screed (with a maximum width of 6.5m) and hopper dimensions as the standard machine. However, power comes from a battery allowing a running time of 6-9 hours, depending on the application. Recharging takes from 60-90 minutes, depending on the supply.

The firm says that the electric machine is more efficient than a diesel as it only uses power when in use, whereas a diesel will typically be idling while waiting for another tipper load of asphalt. The electric drive is also 95% efficient, unlike the lower efficiency of an internal combustion engine (typically around 35%).

The machine has been developed as part of Volvo CE’s drive towards new green construction technologies. However, with the rights to the ABG machines being transferred to Ammann it remains to be seen what will happen with the project. It is worth noting though that Ammann is also keen to introduce greener construction technologies.

While diesel engines continue to be developed, there is no mistaking the current plans for electric driveline projects - Mike Woof writes The growing worldwide consensus on the massive threat to humanity posed by climate change means that the need to reduce exhaust emissions from transport and construction is becoming ever more pressing. As a result, industry is changing and new solutions are being found for transport and construction that will help lower environmental impact. Although many solutions are
  • High performance, high mobility of wheeled pavers
    February 14, 2012
New generation wheeled pavers aimed at use in territories such as the UK, Italy, South Africa and Southern Germany are now coming to market. Pavers in these countries are often expected to be driven from one part of a site to another or for short distances, which is why the additional mobility of the wheeled machine is preferred in many instances over similarly-sized tracked models. This preference for wheeled units comes in spite of the greater stability offered by tracked machines. BOMAG, Caterpillar and
