Asphalt paver proven in tough applications

BOMAG says that its new BF800 paver has now been well proven in tough working applications. The newly developed BF800 follows the same basic design principles of the smaller BF300 and BF600 models and weighs in at 20tonnes, with a maximum screed width of 2.5-10m. Extensive testing of the BF800 was carried out in an array of difficult operations and in late 2010 some 14,000tonnes of asphalt was laid in 3.5 days in 24-hour shifts to reconstruct the Brenner highway on the A22 near Bozen in northern Italy.

The tight time frame and the high demands placed on the finisher in terms of quality and productivity made for an interesting and challenging test. Over 50,000m² of highway was renewed with a 70mm asphalt binder course and a 40mm chip mastic asphalt.

Irregular delivery of material to site on this busy road led to unscheduled, traffic-related interruptions to work. Typically, stop-start paving can result in pavers lowering screeds onto the hot mat causing unevenness, a problem made worse by cooling of asphalt in front of the screed. High tolerances were achieved, with the result of a good surface finish.

Special reinforcements can extend the life of an old or new road, and also offer environmental benefits. Patrick Smith reports. Asphalt reinforcement can extend the service life of a resurfaced road by a factor of 3-4, says Huesker, developers of the HaTelit range of asphalt reinforcement. Aimed at preventing the propagation of reflective cracking from an old asphalt layer through a new surface course, Huesker claims the formation of reflective cracking is considerably delayed or even completely prevented u

    April 26, 2018
New operating features for the BOMAG BF 800 C-2 paver are said to help increase its output and efficiency when working onsite. An important development is the new traffic light system, which helps improve communications between the paver operator and the asphalt delivery truck driver. This ensures a more even supply of material into the hopper and tells the truck driver when it is full. Some proven features have been retained, such as the high quality screeds, which benefit from a long and heavy design, th

The concrete road paving market continues to develop - Mike Woof reports Concrete road paving technology continues to evolve, with new equipment and techniques coming to market. Although concrete road construction has been used for many years, problems with early generation technologies affected this market segment. The first concrete roads were constructed in sections, which led to problems at joints but these were addressed many years ago with the advent of slipform paving. Concrete roads constructed in t
  • Sumitomo develops larger asphalt paver
    January 6, 2017
Sumitomo has developed a larger, high performance paver to meet the needs for productive highway class machines in export markets. The new HA90C-2 is based on the earlier HA90C paver, which was only sold in China and also shares a common design and layout with the existing and well-proven HA60C/W. However the new HA90C-2 offers increased production and performance and has two new screeds allowing more paving options.
