Paraguay road widening – financing settled

Financing is being secured for road widening work in Paraguay.

The US$290 million in bonds arranged by the Paraguayan Government will help pay for the widening or Route 2 and Route 7. A further $200 million is being provided by the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB). The work is being handled by a consortium, Consorcio Rutas del Este, which comprises Ocho A and Sacyr. Construction started in August 2019 and should take three years to complete, while the joint venture partners have a deal that allows a 27-year concession package for Route 2 and Route 7.

A consortium, Rutas del Este, is carrying out the work to improve the stretch of Ruta 2 from San Lorenzo to Ypacaraí. The consortium is headed by contractor Sacyr and has been carrying out the work for the PPP deal to upgrade the Ruta 2 and Ruta 7 highways between Ypacarai and Pastoreo.

    In Paraguay the government is setting up plans for rebuilding Ruta 9, the Transchaco road. Negotiations have been held with regard to funding with the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB). A loan worth US$160 million from the IADB will help fund the work. Funding for the project will also be provided by the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF).

The loan will be used to widen and improve roads across the country and is for 25 years with a grace period of 4.5 years. The Argentina Government will provide a further $200 million for road development projects.
