In the UK the contractor Eurovia has recently carried out a challenging resurfacing job within a tight timescale

The firm had to contend with live traffic on a busy stretch of motorway, while carrying out the work close to shared intersections. The traffic was particularly heavy also during part of the job due to a holiday period and large numbers of tourist vehicles using the stretch of motorway.

To help optimise its operations 3281 Eurovia took these considerations into account and devised contingency plans, setting out its plans using a process of early contractor involvement. The firm developed its strategy to account for an array of different issues and its plans also included working very closely with its supply chain partners.

By planning ahead with the various supply chain partners, an extensive programme was implemented for this project. The preparatory works included closing a six-lane motorway down to three lanes and also implementing narrow lane running. With these measures in place the road planing and resurfacing work could then commence. By early on the Monday morning, all the single narrow lane traffic management had been removed. It was then opened back up to allow three narrow lane running for commuting drivers by 05:30am, ensuring that the peak morning rush hour had sufficient capacity so as to ensure minimum delays for vehicle users.

The contractor’s milling machines worked closely with the fleet of trucks removing the worn road surface from the stretches of motorway lanes being repaired. The paving machines were then able to follow and place a new layer of asphalt over the freshly milled surface, with material supply logistics ensured by a fleet of trucks delivering asphalt from the plant. Effective compaction was also delivered using machines working closely with the pavers' crews.

Neil Huntington, regional director, added, “Eurovia Surfacing has extensive knowledge and experience of working on motorway schemes, including the M6. Recently we have received praise from both 8100 Highways England and the M6 Toll Board for our excellent service delivery, which continues to strengthen our reputation and set us in good stead for bidding the next phase of works on the M6 Toll with Midland Expressway.”
