Chinese construction firm China First Highway Engineering Corporation (CFHEC) will carry out the second stage of Cameroon’s Yaoundé-Douala Highway project. The project was awarded to the Chinese contractor by Cameroon's Ministry of Public Works.

The 200km highway will provide an improved transport connection between Cameroon’s two largest cities and is expected to cost in the region of US$540 million in total. Construction work will commence during 2024.

The first 60km section of the highway opened to traffic in 2022. However, progress has been slow with the project, with work having started back in 2019.

The project is one of several in Cameroon intended to speed road transport in the country. Reducing travel time between Douala and Cameroon’s capital, Yaoundé, is expected to deliver a major economic boost to the country. The road will be of key importance to some of the landlocked nations of Central Africa, delivering a direct link to a major port and will help to boost trade and industry across the region.
