China rebuilding roads in Tibet Autonomous Region

China has set out a programme of works intended to boost rural road connectivity in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Some 4,500km of roads will be either built or improved as part of the plan. The aim of the work is to link all of the region’s towns and villages to the road network by the end of 2019. This is the continuation of a plan to improve transport in the region, boosting economic activity. The aim of the work is to link all of the region’s towns and villages to the road network by the end of 2019. This is the continuation of a plan to improve transport in the region, boosting economic activity. In 2018 34 towns and 533 villages were connected to the road network by links surfaced either with asphalt or concrete. At present the rural road network of the region extends some 68,863km.

    A new 167km highway will be built in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. This will provide an improved transport link between Shigatse (Xigaze) Peace Airport and Lhasa. The project is expected to cost US$3.95 billion. A feasibility study has been carried out into the project and submitted to the region’s transport department. The existing G318 National Road connects the airport with Lhasa but features a number of sharp turns and the new link will provide extra capacity as well as improved safety levels

    Morocco’s road network development programme is continuing, with new local roads, trunk roads and motorways being planned. Morocco’s Ministry of Equipment, Transport and Logistics has said a budget of US$9.84 billion is being set to construct 5,500km of roads in the country.
