Hydraulic excavators are playing a key role in building roads in the West African nation of Benin. One of the major projects has been for the construction of the A-B Highway in the country.

A team of eight 2490 XCMG excavators has been used on the project to carry out important earthmoving duties, as well as for secondary breaking duties when equipped with hydraulic hammers. Due to the tropical climate, extensive drainage ditches are needed so as to prevent flooding during the rainy season. The eight 37tonne class XCMG XE370 machines were supplied in April 2014 and have proven reliable since they were delivered.

The work is one of a number of projects that XCMG equipment has been used on outside of China. The firm says it has been expanding its overseas excavator market in recent years, with over 1,000 of its excavators operating in 27 African countries. Support for the units is provided by overseas service engineers, with a full range of technical support, services and spare parts.
