High rainfall is one of several challenges for equipment used at the Alam Jaya volcanic rock quarry
The operation is now using one of the EC220DL excavator models, which has helped boost productivity by some 30%. In addition, the machine is said to be delivering savings in running costs at the Alam Jaya volcanic rock quarry, through reducing fuel consumption by two litres/hour.

The site is located close to West Java’s capital city, Bandung, at the foot of the volcano, Tangkuban Perahu. The city is home to 2.5 million people and sits at 768m above sea level, while it benefits from one of Indonesia’s coolest climates, with an average year-round temperature of 23°C. The area does have an average rainfall of up to 3.5m/year, which can prove challenging to quarry operations.

Aggregates producer Alam Jaya CV extracts Andesite volcanic rock and crushes this into a range of sizes for use in general construction and road building throughout West Java. The company uses three Volvo Construction Equipment (359 Volvo CE) excavators, including two EC210B-Primes and one EC220DL to load the rock onto trucks.
The firm purchased its first Volvo CE machine in 2012 and was pleased with the EC210B-Prime model, supplied through ITU, the manufacturer’s dealer for the island of Java. The company has a local sales, spare parts and service branch in the province for fast, responsive aftermarket support. Its team of technicians has been trained by Volvo to resolve issues in the shortest time and to offer maintenance advice to customers.

An important feature of the EC210B-Prime model in this application is that its high-capacity electrical system is protected by waterproof double-lock harness plugs to prevent damage or corrosion. Given the success of this unit at the site, the quarry firm opted to follow up with the purchase of another Volvo CE machine, buying the newer EC220DL model.

The EC220DL is developed from the earlier EC210B-Prime and features the improved Volvo D6E Tier 2 engine as well as improved hydraulics and a cab with a more ergonomic control layout and increased comfort.

With the aggregate producer having seen the dependability of the Volvo CE machines in this tough application, it intends to purchase another two EC220DLs within the next year if demand for aggregates continues to rise in the local area.

While a number of other firms already offer electric machines for these categories, Volvo CE is taking the further step of halting development of new diesel-driven machines for these categories. A number of all-electric machines are due to be unveiled at the bauma 2019 exhibition, with further models then being introduced in stages over the following year. The compact excavators will be from the EC15-EC
