Atlas Copco's trio of new drills

Atlas Copco has launched three new heavy duty versions of its proven COP 1800 series hydraulic rock drills. 161 Atlas Copco has launched three new heavy duty versions of its proven COP 1800 series hydraulic rock drills.

The newcomers, COP 1638HD, COP 1838HD and COP 2238HD, are intended for face drilling in underground mining and tunnelling projects involving tough conditions.

One of the main new features is a new side bolt design consisting of four front bolts and two at the rear. This minimises the risk of impact piston mis-alignment and secondary damages to internal parts. It also improves serviceability thanks to easier side bolt torque procedures.

In addition, the front head has been considerably strengthened, making the rock drills more robust for demanding conditions.

"The scope when developing these new heavy duty versions was to extend the service intervals and minimise total downtime, even when drilling in very tough conditions", says Peter Bray, product manager, face drilling equipment at Atlas Copco.

Major advances in tunnelling will allow cars to travel underneath the Bosphorus sea channel in Turkey's Istanbul next year when its third road link is opened, writes Adrian Greeman. The Bosphorus is redolent with history and strategic significance. As one of the world's most significant sea connections, linking the landlocked Black Sea to the Marmara Sea and the Mediterranean beyond, it has been vitally important for trade and crucial for military access. It is also one of the biggest obstacles for land tra

New generation wheeled pavers aimed at use in territories such as the UK, Italy, South Africa and Southern Germany are now coming to market. Pavers in these countries are often expected to be driven from one part of a site to another or for short distances, which is why the additional mobility of the wheeled machine is preferred in many instances over similarly-sized tracked models. This preference for wheeled units comes in spite of the greater stability offered by tracked machines. BOMAG, Caterpillar and
  • Surface quality a key trend in asphalt paving
    March 7, 2012
Improved surface quality and improved machine design are key trends in the asphalt paving sector, Mike Woof reports There is a big difference in asphalt paving techniques in North America and Europe. In North America, the need to construct long stretches of highway quickly resulted in wide pavers offering high throughput capacity, with compaction equipment then being used to achieve the required density of the various courses. In Europe's highway construction projects, distances tend to be shorter and contr

A wide array of crushing, screening and materials handling technologies have been introduced in recent months - Mike Woof writes The manufacturers of crushing and screening products have been developing an array of new systems to optimise production. The recent Hillhead show in the UK was the launch point for a number of these new products, although firms from all over the world have also been developing new designs. Productivity and wear life are two performance factors seeing major benefits from innovatio
