A new road bridge is now open in US capital Washington DC, improving capacity and safety in the city.

The new structure spans New York Avenue and provides the busy Ninth Street link into the city. Carrying up to 25,000 vehicles/day, including some 2,000 trucks/day, the bridge is a major transport connection into the Northeastern side of the city. The roadway for the new bridge is 15.8m wide, boosting capacity over the 34.4m wide structure it replaces. The pedestrian walkways are also wider than on the old bridge. The new bridge also features a centreline barrier that meets safety requirements and prevents the risk of cross-over collisions. This structure is made from high performance concrete and corrosion resistant steel has a design life of 75 years and replaces an aging bridge that was first opened to traffic in 1941 and which had proven unable to meet the traffic demands imposed upon it.

A new report from the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), highlighting the poor condition of many US bridges, is nothing less than a national scandal. According to ARTBA’s report, 47,052 US bridges are in poor condition, while 18,842 Interstate highway bridges have identifiable repair needs. The length of America’s structurally deficient bridges if placed end-to-end would span nearly 1,760km, ARTBA’s examination of federal government data shows. The Brooklyn (NY), Arlington M

Material transfer vehicles and remixing systems are crucial to delivering quality paving. Using material transfer vehicles (MTVs) can play a major role in delivering high quality road surfaces. These units can help boost quality by minimising the risk of material or thermal segregation. A major road paving project has been carried out in Germany using innovative paving methods. For the first time ever, binder and surface courses were paved over a width of 15.5m. This paving job was carried out on a 4.2km st

Soaring over 271m above the Colorado River, the Hoover Dam Bypass overlooks one of America’s greatest icons and assets. The October 2010 opening of the bypass improves the security of the historic Hoover Dam by removing through traffic from US Route 93. This has reduced its vulnerability to a terrorist attack against an international landmark and guarded the most sustainable source of electricity and the scarce water supply for the entire southwestern United States. By diverting traffic from the hairpin tur

US-based manufacturer Castek says that its Visi-Barrier is more than a safety barrier. Because it is highly visible, it solves poor delineation roadway problems prevalent under night driving and rainy conditions. A continuous visible stripe is an integral part of each panel. The stripe consists of highly retro-reflective glass beads placed in a wide vertical stripe that results in year-round, all-weather, high driver visibility, says Castek, a division of Transpo Industries, also based in the US.
