A new bridge in Ecuador will improve transport connections in the country. The opening of this new structure is of note as it is the longest bridge in Ecuador. The Bahia de Caraquez-San Vicente road bridge cost some US$102 million to construct.
Ecuador’s Ministry of Transport and Public Works (MTOP) has signed a contract with World Bank blacklisted China Road and Bridges Corp (CRBC) to carry out road projects worth a combined US$55.52million. CRBC has been blacklisted by the World Bank since January 2009 for acts of corruption in the Philippines. It means CRBC cannot enter any tenders which involve WB funds until 12 January, 2017. CRBC will also take part in the Manta port tender, which will be awarded in January 2013.
The first stage of a controversial Russian bridge project is now complete, with the link opening to use by cars. The Kerch Strait bridge spans the Black Sea, connecting Russia’s Taman Peninsula in Krasnodar with Crimea, the latter having been controversially annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014. Norway could be home to the world’s longest wooden bridge if the government gives the go-ahead for a span across Lake Mjosa. In a new report, researchers conclude that it is possible, both technically and economically, to build a 1.7km wooden bridge between the towns Biri and Moelv. Kenya is on track to build a new highway connection from the port of Lamu to Isiolo. The project is for a 530km highway and will cost US$620 million, with the route running through Garissa. The final route has yet to be identified but it seems likely that the highway will skirt a number of the country’s protected areas that are subject to tight environmental requirements and on which Kenya relies for much of its tourist trade.
