AD Engineering’s VMS for the Gateway WA project in Perth, Australia

Contractors are now installing variable message signs from Australian manufacturer A.D. Engineering International along parts of the Gateway WA Perth Airport and Freight Access project in Western Australia state. Fifteen more of the signs will be installed before the end of the year and will display two-colour text and four-colour pictures as required. Gateway WA is the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken by the client, the government agency Main Roads WA.

Contractors are now installing variable message signs from Australian manufacturer 8232 A.D. Engineering International along parts of the Gateway WA Perth Airport and Freight Access project in Western Australia state.

Fifteen more of the signs will be installed before the end of the year and will display two-colour text and four-colour pictures as required. Gateway WA is the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken by the client, the government agency 6508 Main Roads WA.

A.D. Engineering’s products are large overhead gantry-style variable message signs - full matrix LED display - mounted on the approaches to and along the highways. The first sign has been erected between the Great Eastern Highway and the interchange of Tonkin Highway and Dunreath Drive. When operational, it will provide drivers with rea-ltime traffic information such as expected travel times, congestion information and details of traffic incidents.

Apart from the 16 signs, other technologies include 30km of fibre optic cable, 42 CCTV cameras and 125 vehicle detection sites. Multiple contractors will oversee the placement of the remaining variable message signs and other technology across the project site.

The Gateway WA Alliance consortium, led by 2685 Leighton Contractors, is heading the overall project, costing around US$900 million. Apart from Leighton, Gateway WA Alliance includes 6696 Georgiou, 3369 GHD,1397 AECOM and 6697 BG&E. It was awarded the contract by competitive tender in November 2012. The project comprises road and bridge improvements, local road modifications, facilities and connections for pedestrians and cyclists, noise walls and landscaping.
