UK councils pay out €3mn in pothole damage compensation

Councils paid €3million (£2.5million) in compensation to motorists for pothole damage in 2012/13, according to breakdown services provider Britannia Rescue. Lincolnshire County Council paid out some €422,696 (£359,000) in compensation. The number of compensation claims submitted to councils soared by 79% year-on-year to 32,600 last year. Councils paid €3million (£2.5million) in compensation to motorists for pothole damage in 2012/13, according to breakdown services provider Britannia Rescue.

Lincolnshire County Council paid out some €422,696 (£359,000) in compensation. The number of compensation claims submitted to councils soared by 79% year-on-year to 32,600 last year. Britannia said 9% of motorists had suffered from pothole damage. The average repair bill was €164.84 (£140).

Britannia said there could be up to 200,000 potholes on roads nationwide.

    Colas has won a five-year contract in partnership with Halcrow and Costain for Area 12 in the UK. The contract is for €73 million and is for some 1,200km of major roads and motorways in the counties of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.
