UK awards long-term road comms contract to telent Technology

UK government agency Highways England has awarded telent Technology Services with a major contract to manage over 30,000 roadside assets including messages signs and cameras. Under the seven-year deal worth around €510 million, telent Technology will run the agency’s National Roads Telecommunications Service in England. The centre connects seven regional control centres as well as the national traffic operations centre.

Signs of the times: Highways England awards telent Technology a €510 million management deal
UK government agency 8100 Highways England has awarded telent Technology Services with a major contract to manage over 30,000 roadside assets including messages signs and cameras.


Under the seven-year deal worth around €510 million, telent Technology will run the agency’s National Roads Telecommunications Service in England. The centre connects seven regional control centres as well as the national traffic operations centre.

The contract starts in March 2018.

Tony Malone, Highways England chief information officer, said that assets include around 3,330 CCTV cameras, 3,775 message signs, 229 weather stations and 7,155 SOS telephones.

A statement from Highways England said telent Technology will renew equipment as required and “deliver a service that will provide an open, flexible and scalable telecommunications network to meet the future needs of the business”.

The work will be part of the government’s smart motorway and expressway programmes that are central to the modernisation of England’s motorway.

Highways England is the government-owned company responsible for modernising, maintaining and operating England’s motorways and major A roads.
