New technology could improve safety at intersections by up to 80%. The innovative vehicle and infrastructure technology being developed in the European INTERSAFE-2 research project is targeting known issues of road safety at intersections.

Four systems giving assistance to drivers for right turns, left turns, intersections and addressing give way situations could make major reductions in accidents. Sensor technology installed in vehicles and at intersections relay messages and help boost safety. Finnish research institute 7108 VTT has also been developing a roadside system that measures the friction of the road surface as well as a system to combine all the sensor data for vehicles approaching a junction.

Involved in the project were 1233 BMW, 4212 IKA, 4211 NEC Europe, 337 Swarco, 4116 TRW 4210 Conekt, 3316 Sick, the 4202 Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, 2394 Volvo, VTT and VW.

While both the police and firefighting are recognised as occupations that carry dangers, nearly 13 per cent of the firefighters and police officers who die in the line of duty are killed in vehicle-related incidents, while fire trucks are involved in ten times as many collisions as other heavy trucks.

Safety and autonomous vehicles exercised the minds of some of Europe’s senior police officers at the recent TISPOL European Traffic Police Network Conference in the UK. The European Union looks like missing its target of halving the number of people killed on its roads each year by 2020. Just when European police forces are trying to get back on target, along comes the autonomous vehicle with all its inherent safety issues.

Preliminary data from France over the number of fatalities on the road network reveal safety improvements during 2012. The numbers killed dropped by 7-8%, although the final figures for December are not yet available. The preliminary figures suggest that around 3,600-3,700 were killed on French roads in 2012, compared with 3,970 in 2011. This reduction is in line with targets on cutting the death rate and Ministry of the Interior wants to bring the fatality rate to just 2,000 by 2020. This reduction has bee
