The Princes Quay Bridge for cyclists and pedestrians sits over the A63 in the English city of Hull

The €14 million bridge spans the A63 and, when open, will enable pedestrians and cyclists to cross over the busy dual carriageway.

The assembled 60m-long bridge – weighing 150tonnes - was delivered to its final position last November and then manoeuvred through closed streets into position over the A63 during a single night. The marina platform has been completed, the supports for the steel ramps have been installed and construction has started on the bridge ramps and stairs.

Concrete work on the bridge, laying the paving, landscaping and finishing the ramps will complete the project for an opening something this spring.

The Highways England project, which is the first phase of the A63 Castle Street road improvement scheme, will shape the future of Hull and connect key sites in the city. The bridge is expected to open in the spring which will signal the start of the main scheme.

The proposed €417 million main scheme will create a junction by lowering the level of the A63 at the Mytongate junction. Ferensway and Commercial Road will cross the A63 creating a split-level junction.

Between Princes Dock Street and Market Place the proposal is to widen the eastbound carriageway to three lanes and build another footbridge over the A63, this time at Porter Street.

The use of sophisticated machine control technology has helped halve the schedule required for a road contract – Jeff Winke. By using the latest machine control systems on the equipment fleet, a US contractor has managed to halve worker hours, machine time and overall costs. “We chopped 50% off the contract schedule,” said Jim Swenson, licensed professional land surveyor for Oregon Mainline Paving based in McMinnville, Oregon. “The project was completed a year ahead of the two-year schedule,” he explained.

Engineers with RMD Kwikform used 3D modelling to overcome challenging terrain and tight schedules for pouring a single-deck concrete viaduct in mid-Norway. The Doro Viaduct is a post-tension three-span single-carriageway measuring 9.5m wide. It forms an important part of the large realignment of the E39 Harangen-Høgkjølen route in the Trondheim mid-region of Norway. The project needed a formwork and shoring solution to support a 93m-long, 750m3 single-deck pour for the three span Doro viaduct in Norway. For
