Opening set for Bikos Tunnel section of R4

Opening of the first stage of Slovakia’s R4 Presov-Northern Bypass expressway, including the 1.1km-long twin-tube Bikos Tunnel, is set for this summer.

The first stage - 4.3km long – of the R4 Presov-Northern Bypass expressway in Slovakia is on track for opening this summer.

Paving has started on many stretches, noise barriers are being erected and the Bikos Tunnel is seeing installation lighting and ventilation systems, according to Slovakia’s National Motorway Company, NDS.

The 1.1km twin-tube Bikos Tunnel has 700m of noise barriers and three bridges, all less than 1km in length. The tunnel has been constructed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method and has concrete road surfaces. Boring was finished in mid-2021.

The consortium of TuCon and Vahostav-SK started work on the first phase of the northern bypass of Presov in the summer of 2019 – a contract worth around €143 million. The R4 stretch on the west side of Presov will be connected to the D1 motorway.

Construction of the 7.9km south-west Presov Bypass on the D1 motorway has been underway since summer 2017 and is scheduled for completion by summer 2021. It is being built by the consortium of Eurovia SK, Metrostav and Doprastav for around €356 million.
