Malaysia: 5,000km of new roads set to cost US$4.68bn

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Communications (MIDCom) for Malaysia's Sarawak state on the island of Borneo said that the state will need over US$ 4.68 billion (MYR 15bn) to finance the construction of 5,00kms of new roads. The roads are set to stretch between the interior areas, including Baram Basin and Kapit, to the major cities in the state. Funding for the project would be shared between the state and federal governments, according to MIDCom's Minister Michael Manyin.

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Communications (MIDCom) for Malaysia's Sarawak state on the island of Borneo said that the state will need over US$ 4.68 billion (MYR 15bn) to finance the construction of 5,00kms of new roads.

The roads are set to stretch between the interior areas, including Baram Basin and Kapit, to the major cities in the state. Funding for the project would be shared between the state and federal governments, according to MIDCom's Minister Michael Manyin.

He added that Baram and Kapit currently account for the majority of the 23% of interior areas in the Malaysian state of Sabah that have yet to have road access. By end-July2013, MIDCom's research report for the project will be presented to the state cabinet.

But in the meantime, MIDCom is focusing on the five-year construction of roadways between Miri-Bintulu, Bintulu-Sibu, and Aman-Serian, the Minister said.
