Hungary is to build a 750m-long bridge across the Danube River near Mohács at a cost of around €265 million.

The two-lane, steel-framed bridge will have a two-way cycle path on the south side.

The opening of the bridge in 2026 will to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohac, according to Hungary’s country's construction and investment minister Janos lazar. The event marked the end of the medieval Hungarian kingdom and the beginning of Ottoman rule over more than a third of the country and which lasted around 150 years.

A report last February by Daily News Hungary, said a bridge over the Danube at Mohács has been mooted for the past 30 years. But approval of the design by Hungarian consulting engineer Speciálterv Építőmérnöki this past winter was a key milestone that will allow the project to take shape.
