Bulgaria's Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) has launched a tender worth around €38.6 million (US$38.6 million) for the overhaul of two tunnels on the Hemus Motorway.

Around 190km of the planned 418km of the partially built motorway, also designated A2, are open to traffic. When complete, it will connect the capital Sofia with the Black Sea city of Varna.

The tender is divided into two lots, according to the government agency, and must be submitted by December 5.

According to a report in the Eastern European news website SeeNEWS. The first lot covers the repair of a tunnel located on the 39th kilometre of the motorway. The indicative value is nearly €18.3 million. The second lot, worth €20.35 million, relates to a tunnel located on the 54th kilometre of the motorway.

In August, World Highways reported that work will commence in due course on a 75.6km stretch of highway that links Ruse and Veliko Tarnovo, worth around €502.45 million. The highway will be part of the Transport Connectivity 2021-2027 Operational Programme developed by the European Union.

Work on the route will be carried out by the Hemus-16,320 consortium. This is comprised of Avtomagistrali-Tcherno More, Patinzheneringstroy-T and Transconsult-22.
