Bechtel-Enka win North Macedonia deal

The US-Turkish joint venture will build four sections of the European Corridors VIII and X in the Balkan country north of Greece.

North Macedonia has signed a €1.3 billion deal with US-Turkish joint venture Bechtel-Enka for construction of four sections of the European Corridors VIII and X.

The total length of construction will be around 110km. The sections are Tetovo-Gostivar, Gostivar-Bukojchani, Trebenishte-Struga-Kjafasan and Prilep-Bitola, Ejup Rustemi, according to North Macedonia's Public Enterprise for State Roads.

Corridor VIII is an east-west route connecting Albania's Adriatic port of Durres to the Bulgaria's Black Sea port of Varna via North Macedonia. Corridor X runs from Austria's Salzburg in the north to Greece's Thessaloniki in the south.

North Macedonia recently sent out an Invitation for Expressions of Interest for Construction Supervision For Road Corridor VIII Kichevo-Bukojchani section.

In January, the state highways agency signed a €9.7 million contract with the Macedonian  construction company Granit for work on the A4 motorway which connects the capital Skopje to the border with Kosovo. Work includes widening of an existing road from the Kosovo border to the village of Blace village and construction of a part of the A4 motorway to connect the village with another local road.

Road construction business Granit, based in Skopje, was a state-owned company until it was privatised in 1996. The company owns several concrete and asphalt plants as well as stone quarries.
