Istanbul reflections: a RetroTek-M Dynamic Road Marking Retroreflector fitted to the front of an Istanbul Municipality Transportation Department vehicle
Metropolitan Istanbul’s transportation department has chosen a RetroTek-M Dynamic Road Marking Retroreflector to assist with the pavement assessments.

The retroreflectometer was chosen over traditional dynamic side-mounted systems because it is easy to operate, according to the manufacturer, 8451 Reflective Measurement Systems, based in Dublin, Ireland.

Fitted to the front of the vehicle with good road clearance also makes it a safer solution for the operator or driver and other users. It is twice as efficient which is a major advantage on the very congested road network around Istanbul, said Joe Turley, chief executive of Reflective Measurement Systems.

Unlike dynamic side-mounted retroreflectometers, the RetroTek can simultaneously assesses the retroreflectivity of the road line markings on the left and right of the traffic lane travelled including any centre lane markings/messages/symbols. The RetroTek system is not integrated into the vehicle so it can be easily removed and attached to other vehicles if they are fitted with a standard square front tow hitch bar.

The maintaining of good quality pavement markings is more important than ever in ensuring that vehicles driven by humans and equipped with Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) and upcoming Autonomous vehicles can operate safely on all road networks.

Mobile retroreflectometers have taken a technologic step ahead with the launch of the LTL-M system. New patented technology improves measurement accuracy to a level so far only provided by handheld retroreflectometers and offers better coverage. The need for accurate data on the performance of pavement markings has never been greater as road authorities seek to provide a high safety level for increasingly congested roads. Furthermore, due to the ageing populations in many parts of the world, a growing n

Statistics show that wet weather and the dark is not the best mix for driving, but road markings offer a safety solution While good road markings are essential any time of the day, it is perhaps at night when roads are wet that they can offer extra guidance. Statistics are said to reveal that an estimated 50% of all accidents happen during the night when it rains but such conditions occur only 10% of the time and when there are usually less vehicles on the road. Indeed, at the 1st Road Marking Symposium hel

Better road markings can boost safety for road users. There is currently a strong focus on traffic safety in Europe with a number of programmes intended to reduce the overall number of crashes on roads and cut the statistics for injuries and fatalities. In the first EU programme implemented between 2001 and 2010, the goal was to halve the number of people killed in road crashes. Most EU countries showed significant improvement over the decade and a few countries met or even exceeded this target of 50% r
