Drivers on the M40 motorway in the UK benefit from Astucia's SolarLite studs
Motorists are already benefiting from greater visibility on a stretch of the M25 and between the M2 and M20 near the port of Dover, County Kent, south-east England, where Astucia SolarLite studs have been installed.

Now drivers between junctions 3 and 6 on the M40 motorway heading north-west from the M25 out of London also benefit from the studs.

Astucia recently worked with 3005 Atkins and the 1441 UK Highways Agency to deploy SolarLite studs on the M40.

"SolarLite studs, unlike retroreflective cat's eyes, work intuitively, charging and activating from natural sunlight meaning they're a totally sustainable road safety solution. They also provide up to 900m of visibility: that's ten times greater than that of conventional studs," says 2696 Astucia.

The placement of the 7,000 studs was thoroughly considered. The stretches of road between junctions 3 and 4 and junctions 5 and 6 have been flagged as having perceived high rates of accidents due to the topography, road layout and lack of street lighting, thus the need for clearer road marking.

The Chiltern Hills escarpment, an Area of outstanding National Beauty, sit between junctions 5 and 6, and according to Astucia with the aid of eco-friendly SolarLite road studs, they are protected from pollution damage.

Carlisle, in north-west England, has seen as 20% reduction in congestion since the opening of the city’s US$284million (£176m) Northern Development Route in February this year. Around 10,000 vehicles a day are using the new road, which is broadly in line with the predictions made by highways engineers when building a case to construct a new route connecting the A595 with the M6 around the western flank of the city. Traffic counters positioned on the new road show an average of 9,583 vehicles a day along the

    February 9, 2012
High performance markings are among the safety products used to guide traffic safely, but they must be tested and checked. Patrick Smith reports. Road construction zones, zebra crossings, tunnels and areas with frequent fog are particular focal points with regard to road user safety. This is why manufacturers, authorities and contractors are always eager to use innovative road markings and special studs or, where necessary, lane control devices to assist both drivers and pedestrians in all conditions, parti

A variety of new technology for temporary speed zones during major highway projects across the globe is about to hit the market, while other proven systems remain in demand. Guy Woodford reports The D-Cam P is one of four new mobile speed reading products for temporary speed zones being launched this month by Truvelo. Deployable solely as a speed camera or at a red light intersection to monitor red light offences, the D-Cam P can also act as a speed camera on the green and amber light phases. The machin
