Kenya highway project tendering opens

The tender process is opening for the Nairobi-Mombasa highway project in Kenya. The plan calls for the existing route to be widened from two lanes at present to six lanes, with three in either direction. This will help boost capacity on the busy route between capital Nairobi and the main port of Mombasa, aiding trade and transport for Kenya as well as its neighbours. The tender process is opening for the Nairobi-Mombasa highway project in Kenya. The plan calls for the existing route to be widened from two lanes at present to six lanes, with three in either direction. This will help boost capacity on the busy route between capital Nairobi and the main port of Mombasa, aiding trade and transport for Kenya as well as its neighbours. The Kenyan Government intends for the highway project to be carried out under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. Should all go to plan the improved route would be ready by 2022. The Kenyan Government is also working on plans to widen the 157km highway connecting Nairobi with Nakuru.

    In Uganda planning is underway for the upgrade of the Kampala-Jinja route. Preparations are being made for a new tolled highway connecting with capital Kampala. The upgrade will see the route being widened with four lanes for much of the length, six lanes on the approach to Kampala and up to eight lanes where vehicle densities will be heaviest to carry the capital’s traffic. The construction work is expected to cost some US$74 million and the new link will connect with the existing Kampala-Entebbe highway.
