Japanese funding will help pay for the construction of a key bridge link in Sri Lanka. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is providing a loan worth US$292.14 million for the bridge project. The new link will span the Kelani River.
Sri Lanka's war ravaged roads will begin to benefit from a massive improvement programme shortly, following the cessation of hostilities. Some US$3 billion is being spent in the north and east of the country according to the Highways Ministry.
Japan intends to offer financial aid worth some US$6.47 billion for infrastructure projects in Asean countries. This comes after the recent Asean-Japan Commemorative Summit and Japan-Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). A large portion of the financial aid will be for investment projects under the GMS regional cooperation. The money will be provided in loans and grants.
