Japanese funding will help pay for the construction of a key bridge link in Sri Lanka. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is providing a loan worth US$292.14 million for the bridge project. The new link will span the Kelani River.
Construction of a new expressway connecting Hambantota with Matara is now underway in Sri Lanka. This new expressway will link with the existing southern expressway that runs between Matara and Colombo through the southern town of Galle. The new Hambantota-Matara expressway is cost US$180 million to construct. Funding for the project has been provided by the Exim Bank of China.
Funding has been secured for an important bridge project in Myanmar. The new bridge will connect the key commercial city of Yangon with Dala, spanning the Yangon River. The Economic Development Cooperation Fund of South Korea is providing a loan worth close to US$138 million for the work. The Myanmar Government is also providing over $188 million for the project. India plans to carry out the necessary feasibility study into the bridge and tunnel connection with Sri Lanka. India’s Transport Ministry has said that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide the finance needed for the project, which is now expected to cost US$3.6 billion.
