Japanese funding will help pay for the construction of a key bridge link in Sri Lanka. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is providing a loan worth US$292.14 million for the bridge project. The new link will span the Kelani River.
The project to widen Managua’s Pista Juan Pablo II highway in Nicaragua has taken another step forward to commencing. Nicaragua’s Government is giving its approval for a loan to pay for the project. The US$105.4 million loan will be provided by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI). Further funding worth $136 million is being provided by the European Investment Bank (EIB), with $33.4 million coming from the Nicaragua Government.
Two key highway projects in Italy are exhibiting good progress at present. Construction work on the new Brescia-Milan highway link is now more than 50% complete. The bridges crossing the Serio, Adda and Oglio rivers are 84% complete, while the underpasses and drainage is 49% ready. Service stations, surveying and foundation work is 40% complete while the remaining operations are 227% ready. Italian road construction firm Brebemi believes that the highway be will be complete and open to traffic by 31 Decembe
A new bridge project is planned for Izhevsk in Russia. The bridge will span the Kama River and is expected to cost US$438 million to construct. The contractor VTB is one of the firms that will be involved in the construction of the crossing. In addition VTB is also looking to build a bridge spanning the Lena River as well as a section of the high speed highway that will link Russia’s major conurbations of Moscow and St Petersburg. This last contract looks likely to be awarded in the second quarter of 2014.
China is helping provide funding for Nepal's road expansion. The Chinese Government has agreed a deal with the Nepalese Government to expand the Kathmandu Valley ring road. The feasibility study for the project has been completed and design work is currently underway.
