Ghana bridge building programme planned

Construction is starting on a major bridge building programme in Ghana. The project is intended to boost connectivity in the country, with the work being funded partly through a loan provided by the Spanish Government.     Mozambique’s Maputo-Catembe Bridge is due to open shortly and will become Africa’s longest suspension bridge. The 3km bridge will form part of the road connection between Maputo, Mozambique’s capital, and Catembe. The bridge is costing over US$700 million, with much of the necessary funding being provided by the Export Import Bank of China. The new bridge will improve transport and reduce journey times for drivers, who currently have to rely on ferries travelling between Maputo and Catembe.

    Acrow Bridge, an international bridge engineering and supply company, announced that it will start by the end of the year on a 144-bridge infrastructure project in Zambia. The work will be carried out exclusively by Zambian engineers, technicians and contractors who will be trained in the field by Acrow technicians on the assembly and installation of the bridges. Acrow said it is working with the Road Development Agency of the Republic of Zambia.

    A finance package from the African Development Fund (ADF) will help pay for works on a key road project in Ghana. The US$81.7 million loan will provide con-financing for work on Ghana’s Eastern Corridor project. Measuring 695km in all, the upgraded link will follow the course of the existing N2 route and will provide a better connection from Ghana’s capital, Accra, to the north of the country. Work is due to commence on the 54km stretch of the Eastern Corridor between Jasikan and Dod Pepesu.
