A new road tolling plan will help cut congestion in Colorado. The 5406 Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has a US$1.8 billion project proposed to expand toll lanes for sections of Interstates I-25 and I-70. The project will address sections of the east segment of I-25 and to a stretch of I-70 as this is seen as the best way to tackle congestion in this area of the network. The plan would cover the I-70 corridor north of downtown Denver. CDOT hopes to borrow the necessary US$1.2 billion funding from the 908 US Government to help finance the project and to repay the loans with fee money from the Colorado Bridge Enterprise fund. The plan includes setting up a landscaped cover over I-70 as it runs by Swansea Elementary School and lowering the route by around 12m between Brighton and Colorado boulevards. It also includes adding one lane in each route through to I-270 and adding two tolled express lanes in each direction via the lowered stretch, as well as removing the aging and deteriorating viaduct between Colorado and Brighton boulevards.
